Do you remember what you were doing and where you were at when the first plane hit the World Trade Center? I remember. I was at home and had just turned on the TV and ABC News was talking about a plane that had hit one of the Twin Towers. My first thought was, someone in a small private aircraft must have had a heart attack or some other medical condition that caused them to crash. Then, I saw the second plane hit. I grabbed the side of my couch to hold me up and thought to myself, something is not right here. I was glued to the TV. My heart was heavy and little did I know, it was going to get heavier as the days went on. The reports started to come in about the plane that crashed into the Pentagon and then of the plane that crashed in the field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Our world had just changed for forever.
My phone would not stop ringing. Co-workers and employees just as confused as I was, trying to make sense out of all of this and we just couldn't. Why us was the question. We never knew that there was that much hatred for our country and what we stand for. Living and working so close to Detroit Metro Airport, you got used to the sound of the planes coming in to land and taking off. It was eerie, not hearing them at all. And when you did here a plane you realized it was a fighter jet in the air protecting us.
That day and for weeks to come the best of all of us came out. We were a lot nicer to each other. We loved just a bit more. We took care of each other. We became one, no matter what color our skin was, how old or young we were, we let it be know we were Americans first!!! You may knock us down but we will get back up, as one!! We prayed for people we never met, we put money into the boots of the firemen standing in the middle of the street. We gave and did what ever we could to help. We did what we do best and that is be Americans!!! We took care of each other, period!!! We changed, for the better!!!
As time has gone on, we have let the memories of that day fade. We are still nice to each other but not as nice as we were then. We still love but not like we did then. We still take care of each other but not like we did then. WE are better than that!!!! I challenge myself and every one else, that starting tomorrow, we go back to how we were when this happened. That we be nicer to each other, we love a bit more, we pray for people we don't even know and remember that in that prayer circle, someone we don't know is praying for us. Tell a fireman, police officer, military member or just a complete stranger, thank you for what you do. REMEMBER the good that came out of all of us that day 12 years ago.
